Me and the Devil

Scheduled Time: wed 1600 - 1800 on channel 2
DJs: Kaleb Bordner
Description: Classic west-coast tunes from the 90s and more.
Genre: Blues

About: Frequently depressing, misogynistic, inappropriate, and entirely original, the Blues is a musical style borne from poverty and hard work. An evolution of the spirituals and work songs characteristic of the Slavery and Reconstruction eras, the Blues exists as something wholly American, and specifically Southern. Blues singers came from backgrounds of poverty and blue collar labor. Many artists made little money from their craft, many remained impoverished their entire lives. Select few were discovered by ethnomusicologists such as Alan Lomax in the 50's 60's, bringing their music to a larger audience. Artists of this generation drew on their predecessors and mentors to develop new sounds. These branches of the Blues manifested into such regional traditions as Texas Blues, Detroit Blues, New Orleans Blues, etc. If the Blues is not extinct then it is severely endangered. Very little new music is being produced, and existing Blues music is being ignored. "Me and the Devil" is based around the Traditional Delta and Hill Country Blues of yesteryear, while exploring their regional derivations. Hopefully broadcasting this dying artform can provide not only a record for what once was, but also a catalyst for preservation of deep southern musical heritage, no matter how small. Thanks for reading.
