The top-seeded Washington Capitals are powering through the 2025 NHL Playoffs, and University of Maryland students are getting excited.
UMD’s hometown team is coming off a historic 2024-25 season. They recorded a 51-22 record, earning themselves the number one seed in the Eastern Conference.
After game two against the Canadiens on April 23, UMD students at the College Park Metro station expressed their excitement for the Caps' start to their playoff run.
“Oh, we’re winning the Stanley Cup, 100%” said UMD senior Chase Wilson. “Tonight’s game was amazing. Three to one win? We should’ve won five to one!”
The Capitals’ last Stanley Cup trophy came in 2018, marking the franchise’s first win of the title. Now in 2025, Washington has entered the playoffs with six more division points than they did in 2018, leaving them in a historically secure spot to make another run for the trophy.
The College Park Caps fans are feeling good about the chances for their local team. After game two, UMD senior Anna D’Albora noted, “Honestly, I think we have a pretty good chance. I think we’ll go pretty far. Winning it all, I don’t know, I don’t want to jinx anything. I’m a little too superstitious."
