The winner of the District 3 special election is entering the city council at a unique time, according to District 3 Council Member John Rigg.

Since the council is already in session, voting and actively discussing legislation and issues, the new council member won’t have time to settle into the position like they would after a typical election cycle, Rigg said.

Rigg said he’s excited to work with the new council member, regardless of the winner. He noted that, because they will both represent the same area, they will work together closely.

District 2 council member, Llatetra Brown Esters, thinks that both the long-term residents and the student residents of College Park need to realize that they are one big community, and she hopes that whoever gets elected will realize that too. “We all need to be good neighbors to one another,” she said.

Esters also emphasized the importance of connecting with constituents. She said, “I think it's tough to run and make a connection if people don't know you and don't have any idea of what you think is important, what you value, what you want to work for.”

Whoever wins the special election will serve Fraternity Row, Old Town, Calvert Hills and most of the University of Maryland’s South Hill community. The election will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 11 at City Hall.
