Maryland-born artist Father John Misty will bring his shimmering, glamorous new album to life at The Anthem next week.
Josh Tillman, known as Father John Misty, will perform at The Anthem on Tuesday, September 20.
Tillman’s latest release and fifth studio album overall, “Chloë and the Next 20th Century,” was critically well-received, with positive reviews by NME and DIY Magazine.
“‘Chloë and the Next 20th Century’ serves as a gorgeously crafted highlight reel of the singer’s many previous styles and guises, rather than a complete reinvention,” said NME.
The album builds on the jazzy and theatrical influences shown in Tillman’s previous work. In “Chloë and the Next 20th Century,” Tillman flourishes in his new sound. The track, “Funny Girl,” is a perfect encapsulation of Tillman’s refined new style–it showcases broadway influences. The title track, “Chloë,” layers orchestral sounds over Tillman’s silky baritone voice. Automatically, the listener jolts into the glamorous world of “Chloë and the Next 20th Century.” But on his second track, “Goodbye Mr. Blue,” Tillman opts for an homage to his earlier works: a return to folky, simplistic background over carefully crafted lyricism.
Tillman was born in Rockville, Md., and moved to Seattle at 21, which makes his performance at The Anthem a near-hometown show.
In the past, Tillman was known for more than just his music–he was extremely active on social media. Now, Tillman’s social media is strictly promotional material. Maybe if the audience is lucky (or unlucky), they’ll get to see some of Tillman’s charismatic, lively personality that filled his Instagram with trollish posts.
Singer-songwriter and model, Suki Waterhouse, will open for Tillman. Waterhouse recently released her debut album, “I Can’t Let Go,” this April, and dropped a new single, “Nostalgia,” this past week. Tillman and Waterhouse are both signed to Sub Pop records.
