Nettspend @ The Fillmore Silver Spring

Nettspend’s “early life crisis” tour started off on a high note this past Wednesday. Before the show even started, fans could be heard from outside of The Fillmore Silver Spring, chanting, “We want Nett” in persistent unison while waiting for the artist’s arrival.
Supporting his album, early life crisis, released March 6th, this tour began on April 7th and is scheduled to continue through late May. From the second I approached the venue, I knew the memory of this show would stick with me long after the music stopped. The fans who sold out the event were decked out in Nettspend shirts from his previous tour while they stood in line well before doors even opened, waiting for a chance to be close to their favorite artist.

Finally allowed in, fans overtook The Fillmore’s main room, and the excitement was palpable. With no scheduled opener, fans began moshing to the house playlist that could be faintly heard over the speakers in an impressive display of energy and excitement for the upcoming night. Other than the fans, the first thing I noticed was the stage setup and the screen displaying “early life crisis” for the crowd to see. The multi-level stage design was unlike a lot of other shows I’ve attended, and I was interested to know how Nettspend was going to work it into his performance

My questions were soon to be answered after the lights dimmed and the intro began to play. The first song to kick off the night was “you ready?” and the crowd certainly was. Fans rushed forward as Nettspend, shrouded in his own blonde and black hair, appeared on the upper part of the stage. He performed songs like “crack” and “paris hilton” while rushing back and forth from one side of the platform to the other. From the beginning, the show had been a blur of pyrotechnics and strobe lights, which paired well with the music and intensity presented by the underground star.
I was nervous that the energy that had been so consistent throughout the night would end up faltering at some point during Nettspend’s performance, but as he moved to the lower half of the stage partway through his set, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Performing songs like “Hopskotch” and “no sleep” breathed new life into the performance as the fan favorite lyrics were shouted by the packed floor of onlookers.

He continued with songs like “plan b,” and even crouched down on the platform to get up close and personal with a few of the phones recording the set. Despite the smaller venue, Nettspend managed to fill the space in an exceptional way. The final song of the evening, “stressed,” was the perfect conclusion. Nettspend spent the evening playing fan favorites off of BAD ASS F*CKING KID, and early life crisis, and the last few songs of the set were no exception. Although these songs weren’t the typical show-concluding slow ballads that artists typically like to play, they kept the intensity going until the very last note.
I went into this show not knowing much about the underground scene, so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. What I got was a lively performance that was only made better by the community of fans who kept up with the energy all night. I’m hoping I get to make it out to another one of his shows in the future.
