Brooklyn-based indie rock and folk band Big Thief will make their return to DC on Thursday, April 21, performing at The Anthem for the first time in their career. The band’s last stop to DC was over 2 years when they performed at the 9:30 Club back in November of 2019. The jump in venues highlights their enormous growth and success as a band in recent years. Big Thief is made up of lead vocalist and guitarist Adrianne Lenker, guitarist Buck Meek, bassist Max Oleartchik, and drummer James Krivchenia. In 2019, the group released two albums, “U.F.O.F.” and “Two Hands,” both of which received critical acclaim and were nominated for Grammy awards. The effects of COVID on shows, and musicians in general, makes this long-awaited return all the more emotional for the band's die-hard fans.
The band released their latest album “Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You” earlier this year which successfully fused country and folk roots in order to create a unique and funky eclectic sound. The group’s latest release was reminiscent of Carhartt overalls summers and cross-country roadtrips as it utilizes a certain style of playfulness and nostalgic humor. The album itself, produced by Krivchenia, was created in 4 different locations over the span of 5 months. The group explored canyons, deserts, and mountains in studios based in upstate New York, California, Arizona, and Colorado. The band’s utilization of several instruments, like the twangy jar harp featured in “Spud Infinity” that helped create the mythical, fairytale-like aura that surrounds the album. At its core, and without sounding too cliche, the album feels like home and reminiscing with long lost friends. Creating this familiar nostalgia is something Big Thief has always excelled at - through lyrics that remind you of home and other places and people you might miss, Adrianne Elizabeth Lenker’s hypnotizing vocals and lyrical qualms mixed with the bands transcendental, genre-bending backing could stir something up inside anyone.
Kara-Lis Coverdale was announced as the surprise guest on the band’s Twitter account and will be the supporting act during the first half of the band’s U.S. run. Coverdale, who opened up previously for Death Grips, is a composer and pianist specializing in experimental music. Her latest single “Fireflight” released in late March is an ambient masterpiece.
Whether you want to hear the band’s live take on their latest album, or hear them revisit classics like “Paul” or “Masterpiece”, you don’t want to miss out! In order to catch this amazing performance by Big Thief and Kara-Lis Coverdale you can buy tickets here for $41!
