We’ve all heard about them, those moments when the world softens, sounds become smoother and souls become stimulated. They’re hard to come by, but anyone in the audience of Rosie Darling’s Feb. 4 show at the DC9 Nightclub experienced that moment. Let’s set the stage.

It’s 7 p.m. on a Saturday and the crowd gathers in what may seem to be another low-lit venue, but when the lights come on mixtures of periwinkle purple and royal blue paint the walls. Moments later, dressed accordingly in a blue satin suit, Rosie takes the stage. Within seconds of Rosie singing "Reruns," the fourth song on her EP- Coping, the crowd chimes in.

Rosie’s celestial sound moved members of the audience, who chimed in, as if they had been informed of the setlist themselves. Rosie took her time, she stared into our souls and made us feel safe in our emotions. As the show progressed there were points of peace, of a silence that was so serene that it screamed to us. Rosie and her one-man band, Carter, took their audience members on a journey. The two of them appeared to control the room. Of course, we knew the lighting changes were scheduled, and the disco flashes were perfectly pre-arranged, but part of us began to believe in magic.

Shortly after singing "Always Almost," Rosie called to audience members to turn on their flash, and what followed was the one and only, "Golden Age. This was the human experience under a microscope, whether you were screaming the lines “this isn't living” or “I get anxious in a crowd,” you felt invincible. I personally believe this is what Rosie intended, to provide us with a mechanism to allow our vulnerability to empower us. There aren't many words to describe Rosie Darling without sounding like a mythical fairytale artist, but that's who she is. Following the show, I witnessed her interacting with each member of the audience. Each of which received the same smile and glimmer of excitement.
