Underground Springhouse is coming to the 8x10 in Baltimore
By Ava Rowse
Underground Springhouse can be best defined by their motto, “more of the good, less of the bad.” The band does everything with this in mind, and you can especially feel this live at their concerts.
Along with the Dan Heely Band, Underground Springhouse will perform at the 8x10 in Baltimore on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Both groups have mastered the artful blending of several different genres including reggae, funk, rock, country and soul.
Members include Charlie Haas and Mitch Davidson on guitar, Jackson Thompson on bass and Max Motley on keyboard,. The group met in Athens, Georgia, while students at the University of Georgia, and began making music in their dorm room. Now touring in 14 states, Underground Springhouse has made incredible strides since its college days.
The band’s music is often described as psychedelic indie-funk, but if you listen closely, you can hear notes from almost every genre imaginable. Whether it’s Haas, Thompson, and Davidson bouncing off of each other, or Motley on the keyboard dictating the vibe, you can tell these bandmates have a blast playing music together. For them, it’s all about the music and how it makes people feel.
Their debut, self-titled album came out in 2021, establishing their talent early on. Not soon after, they began experimenting with different influences.
Their song “Roll On” on the album “Tom Foolery” is perfect for a nighttime drive on a gravel back road, while “Gimmeadial” off of the same album might supplement a sunny day of surfing at the beach.
Their 2023 single “Thanks for Joining Me, Bobby” is heavily inspired by Widespread Panic, including elements of psychedelic rock. Released the same year, “Tallulah” is an emotional ballad that pulls heavily from folk music. Each song has elements of different genres making it unique, but the voice of Underground Springhouse is ever-present.
Like all of our favorite jam bands, Underground Springhouse’s live performances include improvisation and creative variations of all of their songs. Every show is uniquely dynamic and different from the one before.
What stands out the most is the sheer talent and unspoken communication required to pull off the improvisational “jamming.” If you’re in need of a night of dancing to mesmerizing music for less than $20, make sure to mark Oct. 4 in your calendar. Get tickets here!
